covering option years

Post by expos on Wed Mar 26, 2014 6:58 pm

Are teams allowed to cover option years in a deal.

I.e

AZ gets

Joe Carter 19/19/option year (option year salary covered by Sud if AZ picks up the option)

Sud gets

Dave Stieb 9/10

the team accepting this deal..is doing so hoping that the option year is valuable...he is taking all the risk..if Joe Carter has a serious injury, jail time, retires, becimes absolute crap.. AZ would have gambled and lost..he obviously will still pick up the option so the opponent doesn't have that cash but its worthless to him...but if Joltin Joe produces..it paid off

the team trading the guy with the option is fully aware that the option WILL BE picked up 100%

Yea, wait on Dan to rule.  I don't see a problem with it as long as it's agreed upon by two parties

Our first case of this.

I don't see a problem either.

Can just put it on the notes. If it's a high dollar option that you're covering all of, I can see the pause. But that'd be a factor for trade czar.

Surprising that an option yr would be a hold up in talks tho, as options were just meant to be a lil extra- not a guaranteed thing.

I don't like the idea. It ties up money for two teams, not 1. It could take 2+ years before teams will know if they are going to spend the money at option time or not.

You make a trade, 3 years later... Oh, by the way, we will be picking up Joe Carter's contract. He may suck, but if AZ is covering his contract, hell yeah I am going to pick it up.

New York will not entertain Option Year talks.

To me when you trade for a player you get the contract that he is playing under period. You can get pay downs because those numbers are set. To have this as a negotiation ploy is wrong. This will create more work for the league gurus and totally unnecessary. If you need to be concerned about a players option salary X amount of years down the road you shouldn`t be trading for him in the first place.

a good compromise could be allowing a team to pay the option if a guy doesnt exercise it

meaning, i deal for joe carter, but dont wanna pick up the 20mil, so sud is paying the 500k decline fee

thats a small, set amount, but, as mark said, if ur worrying about that, u prob shouldnt want the guy anyway

Here's how i see it. you can pick up option at time of the deal and then SUD can cover it.

so deal would be

AZ gets

Joe Carter 19/19/ *23.76

Sud gets

Dave Stieb 9/10

Remember there is no way you can trade future money. but you can pay down. you can pick up the option on any player at any time.

so to answer your question YES you can pay down option year only if you pick up option and that year is now guaranteed.

Makes sense what Dan said. Therefore, that option year becomes guaranteed and there is no what-if scenario that Eric and Mark alludes to.
