The "Jose Fernandez" Salary Arbitration Rule

Post by HELLFISH on Fri Oct 17, 2014 12:16 pm

Should we apply Min IP and AB to qualify for Salary Arbitration Rule.

Right now there is only MIN for Super 2.

we can make this change apply now or for next off season. so far it has only affected "Jose Fernandez"

we all can agree he is stud, but he only picthed 51.1 Inning but qualifies for ERA and WHIP and increases his Arbitration from $800K to $3.5M?????

I suggest the following:

Min IP and AB to qualify for Salary Arbitration Rule

All Batters 150 AB
SP: 10 Game Started (that about 50-90 IP)
SP/RP: 5 GS with 5 G (that about 50 IP)
RP: 25 IP (any start = 2 IP)

IF you agree to the above but have a ez and better qualifying # please suggest.

The only problem is, this rule would make Jose cheaper next year, and we can all agree that he deserves his cheddah!

This one is a tough one. Batters like Mark Trumbo will actually be cheaper due to injury.

Should also look at Relief Pitchers. Wade Davis is due a healthy raise due to his WHIP and ERA. Setup man should not be $8-10.

I agree JI, but we need a MIN and am using JF as the example.
I i think JF sould be paid $3.5M for 8 games played?  YES, but he on the line.

and i rather have a MIN # set.

i suggest help with the MIN IP, GS and AB's

Well, anyone would take JF at 3.5.. or even if he were 13.5, but that is not the issue.

I just want us to be careful on this. While we need a minimum, we have to make sure that great players do not skate on by.

I would say we do 50IP/130ABs since those are numbers that make a prospect no longer be rookies. Now, while they already may be above those numbers, we can learn from MLB to use those numbers to differentiate between a guy who should get a full arb check, vs one who should be paid lesser.

But here's the thing of all of this:

An owner has a right to decline payment, thereby making said player a FA. Most guys are gonna pay to keep their players and their rookie deals.

While this is a potential issue, I feel it is not a substantial one.

I agree  am just trying to avoid, the 10 AB with 400 AVG which would place that player over the MIN Contract due and for pitcher there is ERA and WHIP and a kid could pitch 10 Inning have low ERA and WHIP and be overpaid?  due to only 10 IP. I tried to come up with #'s that can equal about 25% of the season.

Fair point.

So, let's say we put together something...

IF a player is under the mins, then he's elg for only 25% of what it normally would be??

So in the JF sense, that's 25% of 3.5mil??

I would say min of $1mil, max of 25%.

That seems very fair.

And use the 50IP/130ABs... If that's good enough for a rookie to cross thresholds, that's good enough to make a season!

best to keep simple JI, either you make MIN and you get ARB or your at that year MIN Contract.

from talk above here are my revise Mins

All Batters 130 AB

SP: 6 Game Started or 50IP

SP/RP: 5 GS or 25 IP
will get paid as a RP has more game appearance as RP then SP

RP: 25 IP

this was the only loop hole i found since working on teh ARB years.

AS for Trumbo his # project MIN, But his 15 contract will be 80% of 2014. so once you hit arb then you have a bad year or injuries player can't just drop all the way down to Min contract.
