FCC Playoff - First Round Summary
We had two great games in the first round of the playoffs.
The first matchup saw the 3rd seed Buffalo beat the 6th seed Green Bay 11-1. Despite the final score the matchup was fairly close with Buffalo edging out assists by 2, power play points by 1, shots by 2, and save percentage by .7% . Buffalo's team was lead by two young forwards, Joe Colborne who had 5 points, +5 rating, and 12 hits and Jakob Silfverberg who had 6 points, +7 rating, and 19 shots on goal. Dougie Hamilton lead the defense with 6 assists, and 10 PIMs. The most surprising result however, was that Buffalo took 3 out of 4 goalie categories after coming in with the leagues second worst goalie squad (Roto standings on the year).
Buffalo will now face #2 seed Akron who's skaters have more scoring potential but aren't as gritty as the Buffalo squad who will likely take hits and PIMs. Goalie categories heavily favor Akron but they did for GB as well. Akron beat Buffalo in their only matchup this year.
The second matchup resulted in a major upset as #5 seed Detroit beat #4 seed Prague. Prague was not only our champion last year but ran away with the Roto title this year (Not that there is one). Detroit was up 8-2 at about 9PM Sunday with no skaters and only Reimer left as goalie. The stats were close and Prague had a good number of players remaining. The score got as close as 6-5 before Reimer completed his shutout and ended this matchup 7-4. Like Buffalo, Detroit also benefited from Calgary players; Giordano had 5 points and 15 shots. Detroit also got 19 PIMs from Reilly Smith but the difference in this matchup was the goalies. Reimer and Varlamov were great while Bishop had an uncharacteristically poor week.
Detroit will now face #1 seed Philly who has been struggling with goalies since losing Carey Price. Philly had the worst Roto standing of any playoff team (7th) but that hasn't prevented him from winning 17 of 21 weeks this year. This is a head-to-head machine of a team who beat Detroit both times they met.

Precisely why I joined this league. Because I would know nothing about hockey if I didn't play in this league.

Re: FCC Playoff - First Round Summary
I have a feeling it will be another lopsided score in round 2 for Buffalo, this time with me being on the receiving end.
Weak goalies are rough, however, I'm just hoping to have enough starts this week. 2 of the 4 injuried, one, Neuvirth is shut down for the rest of the FCC playoffs.

If the stats hold, Philly beat Detroit by tying the shot category with Andrew Ladds game winning goal late in the 3rd period on Sunday night.
Phew!!!

Duncan Keith passed it up to someone for an empty netter, and they missed, or it would be a 6-6 draw with Arkon, and Arkon having the season tie-breaker. If stats hold, I am glad I lost that bid on Ryan Miller.

I forget if tie breakers go by season standings, I thought they went by the first category (goals) to pick the winner, but I don't remember

They changed that 3 seasons ago I believe. There really are not any good tie breakers. I suppose season record is the best of the worse.Xezus wrote:I forget if tie breakers go by season standings, I thought they went by the first category (goals) to pick the winner, but I don't remember

Sucky that the league isn't publicly viewable!
So, Phi v. Best Signature Ever team?
Or did Akron manage to get in YET ANOTHER final?

If Carey Price wasn't such a little bitch, I'd feel a lot more confident about my chances...
It should be a great matchup!!!!

Either way, I thought you inherited a rebuild, or started rebuilding?
Being in the final has to have you stoked.

Re: FCC Playoff - First Round Summary
Yea it was a complete rebuild. Every player and prospect from the old team was traded or let go as UFAs

Very impressive to see your fast-tracked success.
Team built to be viable for a while, or did you have to kind of whore-out a bit to get this squad?

Re: FCC Playoff - First Round Summary
Strong D group, with two strong rookies to be called up next year (eichel and larkin) and I'll have 19 picks over the course of the next two drafts to add to the teams core. I signed a lot of one hit wonders to get through this year.

Cool.
Well good luck.
I am very 'Anti-Darrin' and thus, do not want to see him win.
He loves hockey. He must lose hockey.
Have your boys step it up!

Re: FCC Playoff - First Round Summary
Great match-up Darrin. I'm pretty sure the tiebreaker is head to head so I think you had it if it was tied but that was close.
Good luck to both of you in the finals. I'm happy to make it as far as I did in just my second year.

Re: FCC Playoff - First Round Summary
Yeah it always frustrated me that hockey is so fickle with goalies. I had the better goalies but I knew when his one mediocre guy got a shutout the first day or so that he was gonna win three out of four goalie categories. It was too big of a deficit to overcome.
Good luck guys.
Good luck guys.
